Flintlock hunters have a unique need. The black powder they use must be kept dry. This proves to be difficult on snowy or rainy days. The flint and frizzen should spark when the trigger is pulled. However, if the FFFFg powder lying in the pan is wet, the gun will not fire. 

Some companies make a plastic housing which covers the lock to keep it dry. However, this needs to be removed before the gun can be fired. The time-consuming process of removing the cover can be detrimental when every second counts. 

A reliable and inexpensive alternative to the plastic housing is to cut the toe out of an insulated sock and apply your choice of water repellant to the sock. After it dries, simply pull your newly protective sock over the firearm, covering the lock. Now both the lock and powder will be kept dry.

When you are ready to shoot, simply slide the sock down to where your cheek rests on the stock. The sock makes a comfortable cheek piece and can be kept in place while shooting the flintlock.
