Trophy Buck Secrets: How many vocalizations can whitetails make? Jim Strelec: I can't say for sure but as a hunter the ones we need to learn about are as follows: fawn bleat, doe bleat, grunts and the snort-wheeze. A hunter needs to learn how to translate deer to English and English to deer. A short grunt is made by both bucks and does alike. It is a contact or separated sound. It has nothing to do with the rut and can be used year round. Most hunters don't know what each sound means. Most think all grunts are made by bucks, but that is not true . . .
