Weather and Whitetails

I always pay close attention to the weather forecast, and current weather conditions during deer season because it has a profound impact on deer activity.

Deer seem to be most predictable during fair, stable weather conditions. They tend to follow their normal routes to and from preferred food sources at consistent times.

However, during times of unsettled weather their habits can change drastically. For example, heavy snow will almost always curtail deer movement for a day. Also, high winds, as well as heavy rain will shut deer down.

I believe this is because of the effect on their defenses. High winds make it difficult to pinpoint the source of scents. The noise created by heavy rainfall or strong winds eliminates their ability to hear approaching danger. Under these circumstances deer feel most safe and secure hidden in their beds until conditions change.

Make sure you are in the woods when the conditions do improve! High pressure, puffy cumulus clouds, and a light steady breeze will surely have every deer in the county on the move.

Another prime time is when a front is approaching promising to bring foul weather. Deer will likely be feeding heavy before the front arrives and they hole up again.
