The first deer I saw during the 2000 West Virginia hunting season was a nice spike. He came feeding through a low gap on the ridge at nine-thirty in the morning. The snow fell and my tree stand swayed in the wind as I shouldered the rifle and centered the cross-hairs on the deer's chest. My finger touched the trigger, but I didn't shoot. . . .
