- Tinkle Up A Buck
H. Bumper Bauer
I have been hunting in West Virginia over the last several years and during that time I have had the great pleasure of getting to know and become friends with an elderly mountain man who has killed more than his share of trophy bucks.
During one of my trips to visit him on his secluded farm I arrived while he was working in his barn. As I arrived the barn doors were standing open and I was astonished to see the number of large whitetail racks he had tacked to the inside of them. Never in my life had I seen that many trophy racks in one place. I had to find out whatever hunting secret it was that he knew to be able to kill that many quality bucks . . .

Ralph Scherder
Every big buck seems to have its own mystery, and sometimes that mystery is a hard one to solve. They fight for breeding rights -- not just sparring matches, either. When two mature animals, each weighing in the neighborhood of 200 pounds and carrying sharp-tined racks, go at it, they're bound to inflict wounds upon one another. . . .

"Several years ago I decided to plant a food plot behind my house. I bought a bag of Clover Mix, made by the Heartland Wildlife Institute in Ohio. I own a twelve acre field and planted only an acre and a half of it.
"Within a week or two the clover started coming up and fifty deer showed up to feed on it. What made it so funny . . .

- For the Record: Wally Carr
Ralph Scherder
Walking into Wally Carr's house is akin to walking into a taxidermy shop. All you see are deer mounts, and all of those deer are big bucks, many of them scoring well into the record books. The biggest buck in the collection was taken in 1996, a 13-point that gross scores 176 3/8 inches and nets 163 2/8 inches, Pope & Young. . . .

- Ethics Part 1 -- Enough Spots for Everyone
Ralph Scherder
Recently I was working on a story for a magazine. I'd decided to interview a guy and write a story about the 160-class buck he'd killed last fall in western Pennsylvania. The interview was just about in the can when the guy suddenly changed his mind about having his story featured in a magazine. I asked why.
"Because word will get out about where this buck was killed," he said. "Even if I don't mention the spot specifically, people will find out. . . .

- Preparing and Cooking Venison
Ralph Scherder
Hopefully you were successful last season and have a freezer-full of venison. Here at Trophy Buck Secrets, we enjoy feasting on venison that we have harvested. It's the circle of life -- from the field to our dinner tables. The ancient Romans lauded the pleasures of hunting for and consuming wild game and so should we. Historians suggest that venison has been consumed longer as a food than other meats, including beef, chicken, and pork. . . .

- Getting (and Keeping) Permission to Hunt
Ralph Scherder
With the increased interest in out-of-state hunting, as well as the nationwide increase in posted property, gaining access to good hunting areas can be very competitive. Many landowners allow hunting by permission, but only give it to a select few. However, with a little courtesy and self-confidence, you can tip the scales in your favor and gain access to excellent deer hunting and maintain it for many years. . . .
